Searching for Normalcy

"And finally, above all else, it is about leaving a mark that I existed: I was here. I was hungry. I was defeated. I was happy. I was sad. I was in love. I was afraid. I was hopeful. I had an idea and I had a good purpose and that’s why I made works of art…" – Felix Gonzalez-Torres

52 Lists: Seven – Learning Something New September 9, 2010

(I know I’m a day late, but oh well.)

There’s this scrappy girl named Shimelle Laine, and every September she teaches an online class called “Learn Something New Every Day.” I’ve never taken the class, but the basic premise is that you make a mini-album and document one new thing you learned every day for the entire month of September. Even though I’m not participating in the class, and I haven’t made an album, I thought I would keep a list anyway. That way, if the mood should strike, I can go ahead and make the album at a later time.

Anyway, enough explanation. Here is my list for this week…

Things I Have Learned This Month (9/1/10-9/9/10):

  • I have GOT to pay attention to the cashier at Michaels. Otherwise I will end up paying $8 for a stamp I thought was only $1.
  • I would like to have Fanless’ grandma teach me how to bake pies. Especially apple.
  • Some of the best meals are the ones you share with friends. Especially if they are free.
  • I can still go out, stay up late and drink a lot without getting hungover. But I will be very, VERY tired the next day.
  • Even though spending a few hours helping your honey clean up and organize his apartment can really wear you out, you’ll feel a great sense of accomplishment afterwards.
  • Sometimes take-out Thai and a “Supernatural” marathon with your favorite boy make for a perfect rainy day at home.
  • Michaels 40% and 50% off coupons are great for getting good deals on pricey tools, like paper trimmers or ATG guns.
  • FPL has the best reporting and callback service of any public utility. Also, if the power has to go out, it’s best if it happens early in the morning while the house is still cold from having the A/C on “arctic blast” setting all night.
  • If I get a computer virus, I don’t need the Geek Squad. I am capable of getting rid of it myself. Makes me feel smart!

Peace out, yo!

52 Lists: Six – Websites September 1, 2010

These are the websites I visit every day.

  • 100 Layer Cake – I know it’s a wedding website, but they have such beautiful images and creative ideas that you can apply to just about any occasion.
  • Buzzfeed – I get my daily pop culture fix here.
  • The Superficial – Ugh… I hate to admit it, but I actually kind of like the humor on this celebrity gossip site.
  • Flickr – Even when I am not uploading my own images, I love seeing what my contacts have posted.
  • YouTube – I subscribe to several crafting channels so I really enjoy watching their tutorial videos.
  • Facebook – Gotta keep up with family and friends, you know.
  • Google Reader – All 216 of the blogs I subscribe to neatly contained in one place.

Peace out, yo!

52 Lists: Three – Things I’m Loving Right Now August 11, 2010

I almost forgot it’s Wednesday and I need to post a new list.

Okay, so here’s a list of things I’m loving right now…

1. My pink and orange-striped pajama pants from Old Navy. So soft and comfy. I never want to take them off.

2. Watching movies on the laptop while laying in bed.

3. Reading. Again. I’ve read a bunch of books so far this year, I’m almost done with “The Madonnas of Echo Park,” AND there is a whole new stack on my nightstand, waiting to be read.

4. This song by Ash. Love! (Also, it makes me want to eat cake.)

5. Talking with Fanless about this year’s trip to Washington. Getting so excited to visit soon! Our friends, Kim and Brandon, (and their girls) will be moving into their new house in West Richland in a couple of months so we’ll get to spend a couple of days with them, as well as seeing Fanless’ family. Yay!

6. Looking forward to having dinner at my friend Regi’s house this Friday. We used to hang out all the time when we worked together but I haven’t seen her in a couple of years. It’ll be nice to have some much needed girl time to catch up.

7. The yummy lunch I had today of tilapia and arroz con frijoles colorados, which were leftovers from dinner at my sister’s house yesterday.

8. The excellent customer service I received earlier today when I had to call 1-877-SEPHORA for

help with an online purchase. The girl I spoke to was awesome, and she added some extra free samples to my order.

9. This season of True Blood. It’s sooo good! Thank goodness, because last season sucked. =)

That’s it for now. Pretty short list, but they are all things that are making me happy right now.

Peace out, yo!

52 Lists: Two August 4, 2010

I realize that I never mentioned that this post was totally inspired by this one from Andrea of Hula-Seventy. I love her sweet blog and her 52 Lists project (52 lists in 52 weeks, one every Wednesday for a year) is totally inspiring.  I love making lists. Shopping lists, to-do lists, lists of songs, lists of things to remember, lists of things to forget… I even have the original Listography book and I want to collect all the other ones in the series. I guess I’m just a listaholic!

Anyway, list #1 would be the “What I Would Tell Her Post”, so let’s try something simple for list #2…

20 Movies I Never Get Bored of Watching

These are the movies that I could watch (and probably have) a million times and never get tired of them.

1. Boondock Saints

2. American Psycho

3. Amelie

4. How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days

5. You’ve Got Mail

6. Sweet Home Alabama

7. Confessions of a Shopaholic

8. Dogma

9. Empire Records

10. That Thing You Do

11. Gossip

12. The Ugly Truth

13. Jurassic Park (the first one)

14. Evolution

15. Singles

16. The Mummy

17. 10 Things I Hate About You

18. Very Bad Things

19. High Fidelity

20. Office Space

What I would Tell Her* July 16, 2010

1. Value yourself more. You are unlike anyone else. You are God’s unique creation and He loves you.

2. Your mom is usually right. And your dad is strict for a reason. Don’t get mad at them. Understand that they love you and want what’s best for you.

3. You will never learn to swim. That’s okay.

4. You will always love books, you will always love reading and writing and poetry. Enjoy that.

5. Study, study and then study some more. You may not feel like it, but you will be grateful for it.

6. Even though it won’t feel like it, school will be over in a few years. And those jerky kids that make fun of you and bully you won’t be in your life forever.

7. Don’t worry about boys and whether or not they like you. You will learn that they are not worth the energy.

8. Save your money. You don’t need another handbag or pair of shoes. Also, don’t apply for credit cards. EVER!

9. You will never stop being shy around strangers. That’s okay. It’s part of who you are.

10. Don’t let other people lead you down the wrong path. You know what’s right and you have strong morals. Stick to that.

11. That drastically short, “Princess Diana” haircut you got in middle school? Yeah, DON’T do it. You’ll end up regretting it and trying to grow it out for at least the next two decades.

12. Go to college. Actually, go AWAY for college. And finish. It will seem scary and daunting, but you will be glad when you have a degree. It doesn’t matter in what, as long as you have one.

13. Don’t worry about fitting in or being popular. Just be yourself and be proud of that.

14. When your mom tries to teach you to sew, let her. Also, learn to knit.

15. As much as you’ll want to, do not dye your hair until it starts going gray. You will be stuck in a never-ending cycle of roots and touch-ups and color changes.

16. Resist trends. They are fleeting for a reason.

17. Do NOT marry that guy. He doesn’t love you and certainly doesn’t respect you. He will only cause you heartache and insecurity.

18. Learn to drive sooner.

19. That group of girls you’re trying so hard to fit in with? They are not your friends. They will talk about you behind your back and turn on you for being “too honest.” But don’t worry; you will eventually find a new group of friends. And they will be amazing, beautiful, talented and kind. They will love you and accept you exactly as you are, imperfections and all. Treasure this, because it only happens once in a lifetime.

20. One day, in the future, you will meet a cute German/Mexican boy. He will be funny and smart and sweet and he will appreciate you and accept you as is. Let the friendship happen naturally. Don’t rush it. Learn to love each other, before you fall IN love with each other. It will be good and you will be happy.

*If I knew then what I know now.
