Searching for Normalcy

"And finally, above all else, it is about leaving a mark that I existed: I was here. I was hungry. I was defeated. I was happy. I was sad. I was in love. I was afraid. I was hopeful. I had an idea and I had a good purpose and that’s why I made works of art…" – Felix Gonzalez-Torres

Baby, Baby, Baby, Ohhh…* April 30, 2011

*A Bieber reference. I think I can officially say I’ve reached a new low.

I attended my sweet friend Vanessa’s baby shower earlier today. The theme was vintage and “nesting”, so there were all these lovely little details relating to birds and all things retro.

She had a candy bar set up in the dining room which had all kinds of “old school” sweets like candy dots, gumballs, and big lollipops.

At the entrance to the house there was a milkglass bowl with tags and pens for the guests to write their wishes for baby Grace. The wishes would then be dropped inside a vintage birdcage.

There were really cute handmade touches everywhere, like this display of baby pictures of Vane and her hubby, Richard.

Lunch was served outside and the place settings were vintage-y mason jars with each guest’s picture on them (the jars were for use with the candy bar; cute, huh?). Each guest also received a little bird’s nest with a pink egg-shaped soap (inside the box with the brown ribbon) as a thank you gift. Very sweet.

The centerpieces were white and cream (I think?) baby roses inside of larger mason jars, wrapped with paper doilies and a cutout silhouette of a bird, then tied with a piece of string.

The gift table. I can not possibly tell you how many adorable, tiny, pink things were in there, but suffice it to say there was a lot of “Awww”-ing when she was opening the gifts later. And another friend, Maritza, who is a gifted sewer, gave her the most beautiful, handmade baby quilt that was personalized with Grace’s name. I wish I had thought to get a picture of it because it was truly gorgeous.

The food was delicious. Very “tea party”-like and all prepared with love by Damaris.

IMG_7685

A vintage-y tin bucket held all the drinks which were in retro-style glass bottles.

The mommy-to-be showing off the beautiful mommy bracelet that our friend, Esther, made for her. It’s similar to a Pandora-style bracelet, with all the little beads and charms, but it says “Gracie” and has pearls (the baby is due June 28th and pearl is the birthstone for June) and a little butterfly.

IMG_7687

Dessert was cupcakes from Misha’s.  Let me just take a moment to express my sadness at missing out on the red velvet cupcakes. There were only five of them and by the time I made it to the front they were all gone. (Insert real tears here.) Vanessa found the antique scale on Etsy and it will become a décor piece in the baby’s room post-shower.

Again, the red velvet cupcakes (green icing) are just there, tormenting me. I had to settle for a lesser than, regular vanilla cupcake. Disgraceful, I tell you!

Anyway, everything was beautiful; the food was delicious; and everyone had a really nice time. Thank you, Vane, for letting me be part of your special day!!

Peace out, yo!

Scrappiness April 16, 2011

Filed under: Scrapbooking — Lulu @ 1:46 am

I noticed I hadn’t posted any scrap layouts in quite a while. I’ve made a few over the past couple of months, but I’ve just been lazy about photographing them. Anyway, I finally did that tonight. Sorry for the poor lighting, but it’s late.

For this one I mixed products from Crate Paper’s “Portrait” and Echo Park’s “For the Record” collections. My new favorite scrapper is Piradee Talvanna (I absolutely LOVE her style) and this layout was scraplifted from this one she created. The cut sizes and products are different (she used Bo Bunny’s “Gabrielle” collection), but the colors and arrangement of elements is similar. This is probably my favorite layout that I’ve made in a long, LONG time.

and-so-it-began

This one I just feel kind of “meh” about. I don’t know. Feels too “soft” or something. But I had it on my desk for about two weeks and kept tweaking it until I finally got fed up and called it done. They can’t all be winners! (Oh, and all products – except the big green flower – are from K&Company’s “Nature” collection. The green flower was made by my friend, Barbara.)

cherish

This one I really like. It uses all K&Company “Handmade” products, and that is easily one of my favorite collections of all time. But I really love the pictures. These were taken last month, heading from Richland to Yakima, WA. (That reminds me, I have some pics to share from the trip. I’ll have to get to those sometime this week.)

desert

This is a picture of my cousin and his wife and kids, taken outside my niece’s apartment, on Christmas Day last year. I just thought it was such a cute family picture the I really wanted to scrap it. I have no idea what the products are, but they are from a Noel Mignon kit.

lopez

This was also made from a Noel Mignon kit. I can’t remember the name, but it was the one she had for February. I’m really liking bright yellow right now for some reason.

love-birds

This is currently my favorite picture in the world. It’s Fanless and his mom during Family Christmas lunch in Connell, WA this past December. I just really love how sweet he is to his mom all the time. He is so respectful and, even though they live 3,000 miles apart, he still listens to her and does as she asks whenever we are in Washington. It’s really cute! Here’s a perfect example: during that trip there was one night that his aunt Linda stayed over at his mom’s house, too. The following morning, she had forgotten to take her shampoo out of the guest bathroom and Fanless was just finishing up in there after his shower, so the door was locked. Aunt Linda asked me if I could go in and get it for her, so I knocked on the door and he was like “hold on!” So I replied “I just need to get Aunt Linda’s shampoo.” Again he replied “hold on. I’m almost done.” So then I said “your mom says to open the door so I can get the shampoo” (she didn’t; she wasn’t even in the immediate vicinity.) Not even one second later I hear click and the door opens and he lets me in to get the shampoo. Hee! (All the products, except the title alphas – are SEI from an old Work In Progress kit.)

momma's-boy

I really like this layout as well. Almost all of the products are from Studio Calico’s “Napa Valley” kit.

old-friends

Cherry blossom trees were starting to bloom all over northwestern Washington in March. So pretty! I’d only seen them winter-bare before. Anyway, I used leftovers from Basic Grey’s “Olivia” collection for this (I used that collection to make a baby album for my friend, Joy; will have to share those pics soon), along with the Fiskars’ cloud punch and Lawn Fawn’s “Say Cheese” stamps.

pink-trees

Aww… I love this picture so much. This is Fanless’ Grandpa Bud when he was in the Navy. I’m guessing he must have been about 19 or so at the time. So handsome. This totally reminds me of one of those Gene Kelly-era movie star posters. Like this one from “On the Town.” Anyway, the papers are from K&Company’s “Life’s Journey” and Making Memories’ “Vintage Findings.” I liked that they had that old, vintage-y look to them that complemented the photo. The postage stamps are from the K&Co "”Life’s Journey” ephemera pack and the title alphas are from Making Memories’ “Panorama” collection.

sailor

These are some old (circa 2006-ish) pics I had of my mom on her birthday. I’ve been holding on to them and finally decided to scrap them using Bo Bunny’s “Olivia” collection. I am madly in love with that chipboard dressform. And I really like the rich colors in this collection.

simply-beautiful

This layout is made with all American Crafts’ “Dear Lizzy Spring” collection. I’ve been hoarding those products for at least six months and finally decided to break them out.

sunshine

This is the last layout and I have no idea what these products are. I think they are from my friend, Vanessa, as she shared her stuff with us when she did a recent purge of her scraproom. BUT – they also kind of look like the stuff in the February Noel Mignon kit. So I really don’t know. But again, there is that bright yellow that I’m liking!

uncle

And, finally, I have to share with you my latest purchase… Japanese Washi tape!! I know, I know… I’m late jumping on this bandwagon. I’ve been wanting to purchase some of these tapes for about two years now. But they are really expensive so I wanted to wait and see if I really truly wanted them, or if it was just the fad that I was into. After two years I decided to bite the bullet and get a few. They arrived today and I’m in love! I want to marry that one with the cameras on it! In case anyone’s interested, I purchased these from Pretty Tape on Etsy.

WASHI

Alright, peeps; it’s 1:40AM and I’m trying to write this post while simultaneously watching “No Country for Old Men.” That means I’m going to be lazy and not do grammar/spellcheck. And if you’ve stuck around this long, you deserve a prize. No, really.

Peace out, yo!
