Searching for Normalcy

"And finally, above all else, it is about leaving a mark that I existed: I was here. I was hungry. I was defeated. I was happy. I was sad. I was in love. I was afraid. I was hopeful. I had an idea and I had a good purpose and that’s why I made works of art…" – Felix Gonzalez-Torres

I certainly do not claim to be any kind of beauty guru, but I have always loved fashion and beauty magazines, makeover shows, trying out new and different products. Because I always rave about great new finds to friends, I thought this would be as good a place as any to share my finds. So here are my four current beauty “must haves.”

Two amazing hair products that I’m completely in love with are the John Frieda Frizz-Ease Daily Nourishment spray and Organix Nourishing Coconut Milk Weightless Mousse. Both are leave-in conditioners, and they are fantastic. My hair is color-treated and naturally curly – but I typically blow it out straight – which means that it tends to be on the dry side. These products are meant to be applied to towel-dried hair prior to heat styling or air drying. Both of these products leave my hair much softer to the touch, with a nice, natural (non-greasy) sheen to it. Bonus: They both also smell really good. I used the coconut milk mousse earlier today and I keep sniffing my hair, it’s that good.

Working from home means that I don’t have to deal with getting dressed up and applying makeup every day. But I do like to look at least a little bit groomed when I have to step out and run an errand. Usually a swipe of mascara and a dab of lipgloss do the trick. My current favorite mascara is Cover Girl Exact Eyelights Color Enhancing Mascara. The brush is a perfect shape for getting coverage on all of your lashes – even the very short ones in the inner corners – and keeping them separated. The formulation allows this mascara to go on smoothly and evenly. It is great at thickening and darkening lashes without clumps or “spidering.” I don’t know about the other shades, but I use the Black Ruby shade, and it has a touch of burgundy shimmer which really contrasts nicely with my green eyes.

My lips tend to chap a lot because I always chew on them absent-mindedly. Because of this, I keep tubes of Chapstick in every purse, in my car, on my desk… But my absolute favorite lip balm is Rosebud Strawberry Lip Salve. This product really helps relieve the dryness and chapping, but it’s not heavy or waxy. You really only need a tiny dab to do the trick, so a tin lasts forever (I’ve had mine for about two years, and only now is it getting close to needing replacement). It also smells really nice, which is always a plus in my book.

If you are using any of these products, I’d love to hear your thoughts on them.

Peace out, yo.

Thankful November 26, 2009

Even though life is usually perfectly imperfect, and things don’t always go as smoothly as I would like, there are many things for which I am thankful right now.

  • I am thankful for my wonderful boyfriend. He is sweet and kind-hearted and makes me laugh every day. I feel very fortunate that I’m the girl he fell for. =)
  • I am thankful that my mom is here with us for the holidays, and that her knee surgery went well and she is on her way to making a full recovery.
  • I am thankful that at almost 80 years old (next month!) my dad is still healthy and strong and physically able to tend to their little farm in Panama. He is happy there doing something he enjoys.
  • I am thankful that my sister and my niece are both happy in relationships with good, decent men that love and care for them.
  • I am thankful that my friends are thriving in their own ways, with their own lives, and managing to get through the hardships and disappointments that life sometimes throws our way.
  • I am thankful for my hobbies of scrapbooking and photography and reading, which keep my mind active and my creativity flowing.
  • I am thankful for my job that – even with the occasional headaches and hassles – keeps me content and proactive, and provides a salary that allows me to take care of myself by keeping a roof over my head, food on the table, a car to get around in, and the occasional new handbag. =)
  • I am thankful to have a whole other kind, warm-hearted and welcoming family on the other side of the country, and for the opportunity to visit them and partake in their family holiday traditions. Even if I don’t know all the lyrics to the Christmas carols. =)
  • I am thankful for the Wright Brothers, without whom air travel may not have been possible. Yes, I get extremely agitated and short of breath and freaked out every time I sit in an airplane. But when you get the privilege of seeing the beauty of Washington state – with its sprawling farmlands, majestic mountain ranges, and verdant evergreens – as you fly overhead, it is SO totally worth the panic attacks.
  • I am thankful for the men and women of the armed services, so far away from their homes and their families, putting their lives at risk, to keep this country safe for me and my family. Regardless of your opinions of the war and the administration that got us into this predicament, the troops deserve to be honored and respected always.

I’m sure if I sat here I could think of many more things, but I think that’s a pretty good list.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!!

Sick… November 18, 2009

Again.

Dod gammit! Can’t I ever have a 12-month period that does not include any length of time consisting of sniffling, sneezing, congestion, sinus pressure, body aches, and exhaustion?? On the plus side, at least my throat is not hurting (Fanless took that symptom all to himself).

Hopefully, we’ll both have time to fully recuperate prior to our Washington trip in three weeks (OH MY GOD!! Three weeks?? No way!!)

Alright, I need to go back to laying on the couch watching “Jeopardy.”

Peace out, yo!
