Searching for Normalcy

"And finally, above all else, it is about leaving a mark that I existed: I was here. I was hungry. I was defeated. I was happy. I was sad. I was in love. I was afraid. I was hopeful. I had an idea and I had a good purpose and that’s why I made works of art…" – Felix Gonzalez-Torres

wanted: an exciting, all-expense paid vacation! July 31, 2008

My allergies have been kicking my ass for the past week or so, causing me to be a little "zoned out" (okay fine — a little more than usual). I just started taking Zyrtec a few days ago and so far, so good. But it does make me really loopy and makes it hard to focus. So rather than even try to put together a coherent post, please allow me to share some randomness with you.

1. Spent ALLLL day Saturday (11am – midnight) with my scrappy girls at Scrapbook Central in Coconut Creek. We had so much fun! I wasn’t as productive as I would have liked (what did I predict? I told you my mojo would die when I was there, right?), but I did manage to make two cards and six layouts that I’m really happy with. So I guess it wasn’t a total waste.

2. On Sunday morning, the boy and I joined five (well, six if you count Mia, the cutest 2-year-old ever!) of his friends for breakfast at Jimmy’s Eastside Diner on Biscayne Blvd. We were celebrating his BFF, Brandon’s, birthday. After breakfast we went to Target (yes – ALL of us) and I am happy to report that I did not buy a single thing! Yay, me! (Not that I wasn’t looking.)

3. Damaris asked me to be a guest designer for SDUI for August! I’m so excited! I’ve never guest designed before. I’m supposed to make a mini-album using a kit she gave me. I haven’t started yet, but I will try to post pics after it’s done and I’ve submitted it to her.

4. FINALLY got my visitor’s parking passes for the beach. This has been an issue since the boy moved to his new apartment. At the old place I could park for free in the alley behind his office (they gave me a sticker to use), which was exactly eleven steps to the back door of his apartment building. The new place is in a different residential zone (Miami Beach is broken up into zones) and I need a special pass to park there. Otherwise I have to park in the garage off Washington Avenue for $15 a day (from July 4th weekend through this past weekend I spent like $80 in parking!) Now I have passes all the way through April of next year for only $11. Yay!

5. Tomorrow night I’m making a special birthday dinner for my sweet friend, Tere. I have to go to the grocery store tonight to get all the ingredients, plus my regular groceries (I have NOTHING in here).

6. I am so not liking "Suede" on Project Runway. Dude, seriously, stop talking about yourself in the THIRD PERSON!! Fuck!! So obnoxious. On the flipside, I want to marry Tim Gunn. I just love him! How cute is he saying "Holla at yo’ boy"? Or rather "Holler at your boy" (with perfect diction). Cute!

7. Okay, seriously, where did they find the stylists for this season’s "Shear Genius"?? OMG, they suck!!

8. I did not buy yellow shoes (you can relax, Anna!), but I did get the cutest tan-yellow bag at Target with one of my bday gift cards.

9. I organized my scrap space last night while watching the X Games on I also sorted out some ATCs that need to go in the mail tomorrow. I hosted a "Culture/Heritage" ATC swap on SIStv and the cards I received were so gorgeous! I’ll post pics at a later date. (Don’t feel like taking out the camera now.)

10. Also, thanks to Vane, I now want to get the Fiskars fingertip knife. It’s actually a lot more comfortable than it looks. And only $4 at Target! I also want to get the 3" square Giga Punch from Marvy. (Dude! I found the punch at Micheal’s this afternoon and it was on sale for $10! That is an awesome price, so of course I got it! Yay!!)

I guess that’s it for now. How exciting is MY life?? Be jealous! (Eyeroll)

will it ever end?? July 24, 2008

This has been one of the LONGEST. WEEKS. EVER!!! Seriously, it just needs to end already. It’s probably because I have stuff I’m looking forward to this weekend (you know, like when you’re a kid and it’s Christmas Eve and you just want it to be Christmas morning already so you can open your gifts but it feels like it’s NEVER going to get here? Like that.)

So let’s see… what have I got going on this weekend? Well, tomorrow night I’m running a couple of errands after work, then going over to the boy’s house to have dinner and watch some boat races with him. I don’t usually see him during the week unless we have a specific outing planned so I really value our time together on the weekends, even if it’s only a few hours.

On Saturday I get to scrap ALL DAY LONG with my beloved Scrappy Girls!! YAY! It’s Ady’s Birthday Scrap Party and we’re all getting together bright and early at (Attention, Stalkers!) Scrapbook Central in Coconut Creek to enjoy a full day of our three favorite activities: scrapping, eating (pizza), and talking… and talking… and talking. Which undoubtedly will lead to laughing. A lot of laughing. A lot of very loud and obnoxious laughing which will garner us many dirty looks from the other (quiet) scrappy people there. Oh well! We only get to hang out together like this once in a while so they’ll just have to suck it up and deal. Besides, what do you expect when you get a bunch of Latinas in one room together and hop them up on soda, birthday cake, and glue?

Oh, and I know I need this scrap time because I’ve been literally jonesing for it. Even today as I was printing out pictures and packing my crop bag (yes, believe it or not, I did not wait until 20 minutes before the crop to pack! Only for you, Ady!), I had to fight the urge to start making layouts. I think the last time I really sat down and scrapped was at Damaris’ house about two months ago. Of course, with my luck, come Saturday I’ll totally loose my mojo. I did make a card today, though. It’s for my BFF and I want to get it in the mail this weekend. I’ll post pics at a later time.

Sunday we are celebrating Brandon’s (the boy’s BFF) birthday. I *HEART* Brandon and his adorable wife, Kim. They are just the sweetest and most genuine people. Actually, all of the boy’s friends are awesome. Every time we hang out with any of them I always tell him later how much I like his friends. And they all came to my birthday gathering last week. That made me feel really good, because you always want the people that are important to your significant other to like you. Brandon and Kim even drove down from Palm Beach/Lake Worth (over an hour away) just to hang out! How cool is that?

Alright, I guess that’s enough rambling for now. It’s almost time for "So You Think You Can Dance", then "Burn Notice." Priorities, folks!

this used to be more exciting July 17, 2008

Somehow birthdays just seemed more fun and exciting when you were a kid, didn’t they? Parties and cake and presents and games and (in the case of Latins) piñatas… As an adult, not so much.

Last night I had a pre-birthday dinner with the Scrappy Girls and Tere. We enjoyed some delicious Puerto Rican food and very lively – and LOUD – conversation at Old San Juan Restaurant in West Miami. The food was great, the company was the best, and I scored some very cool birthday booty! Scrappy stuff from AC, MM and KI Memories, an awesome Stampin’ Up stamp set and ink, adhesives for my Tombo roller (God knows you can never have enough adhesive!; at least I can’t) and not one, not two, but THREE Target gift cards (my mecca)! Do these girls know me or what??

Today is my actual birthday and, luckily, my employer gives the day off for your birthday. It worked out perfectly because I needed to take my car in for some minor maintenance and didn’t want to waste a personal or vacation day on it. So basically, today I took my car to the shop, ran a couple of errands, got a desperately needed pedicure, and now I’m just sitting here waiting until 7pm to pick up some books at my friend’s BF’s house. Tonight I’m looking forward to "So You Think You Can Dance" and new episodes of "Fear Itself" and "Burn Notice" (OMG, how in love with Jeffrey Donovan am I??) I tell you – exciting stuff, folks! I’m a woman on the verge!

Oh well, maybe someone will surprise me with a piñata before the day is over. And if it’s filled with Butterfingers and cash, so much the better! 😉

I’m really loving how easy it is to use AND – best part – it’s FREE!

Here’s another layout I just did using one of my niece’s wedding pictures (I think you can click to enlarge).

Monday Mindlessness July 14, 2008

Hello, my people!! (Okay, really, do I even HAVE people??)

I have a few long and winding posts, on various and sundried topics, sitting in draft mode. Not a single one is ready to publish. But I still wanted – no, NEEDED – to post something. So today you get randomness…

1) My parents have been in Panama for one week now. Surprisingly, I can hear my mother better when she calls from Panama than I could when she was living 15 minutes away. Go figure. (More on the Panama thing later.)

2) My birthday is in three days. I am almost unaware of it, except for the fact that people keep calling me to ask me what I want for my birthday. Honestly, I have no idea. I feel weird asking for gifts. I AM looking forward to having Puerto Rican food with my girls, though! Mofongo… yummm…

3) I went to the Vans Warped Tour on Saturday. A) I didn’t get sunburned, and B) I got to meet a couple of cool musicians. It wasn’t as exciting as I had expected. That could be simply the band roster they had. Who knows. Anyway, more on that later also.

4) I am currently obsessed with this, this and these. I do not have any of these. I would sell my left kidney (and a portion of my right) for these.

5) I need yellow shoes. Actually, no. I don’t NEED them. I want them. Just ’cause.

6) I also want these! The boy designed them for me online (, yo!) but I have a hard time justifying spending $80 on a pair of shoes that I am nowhere near cool enough to pull off wearing.

Umm… I guess that’s it. I’m trying to avoid working and I’m having leftover pad thai for lunch. Oh yeah – envy my rockin’ party life! (super-mega-eyeroll)

One week In

It has been one week since my parents decided to embark on their new "life journey." One week ago today my parents boarded a plane to head off for their new life in Panama. I wish I could tell you the name of the exact town, but apparently it doesn’t have a name. It lies somewhere between Chitré and Pesé, approximately three hours from Panama City.

Their reasons for this decision were seemingly out-of-the-blue and entirely personal. I’ve spoken to my mom on the phone a few times and it’s funny that I can hear her more clearly than when she would call me from her house 15 minutes away. They have purchased a farm, a homestead, that holds a little house with three bedrooms and two bathrooms (this isn’t like Shoma Homes; so even with that many rooms, it is still little). They want to raise pigs and chickens and cows (oh my). They have purchased a washer and a dryer. They are having their phone and electricity installed tomorrow. They have to get their personal belongings out of customs, but someone lost some paper somewhere. They are making friends, they are being invited to dinners at homes of people they just met and to birthday parties of children they don’t know.

They seem happy and content and that is what is most important.
I miss them so much I can’t stand it.

I miss my mom’s warm hugs and her home cooked tortilla de platano and garbanzos frito. I miss my dad’s longwinded stories that incorporated imitations and hand gestures, stories that would make my sides ache from laughing. I miss showing my mom my new scrap pages every time she would drop by to visit and her always saying the same thing ("Mamita, eres una artista!"). I miss my dad calling me to ask me how to spell something in English and me calling them to ask how to say something in Spanish.
And I miss what hasn’t even happened yet: the family get-togethers that we won’t share, the holidays we won’t get to celebrate together, the pictures I won’t get to take, the everyday nonsense I won’t get to talk to my mom about…

I’m sure it’ll get easier to deal with as time passes. It’ll become the norm, the way it is. But for right now, right at this moment, it totally and completely sucks.

A quicky scrapblog page I made of my niece and her hubby sharing their first dance. The song was "Somos Novios" by Andrea Bocelli.

Can I just say how much I love this Scrapblog layout I did in, oh, five minutes? It’s one of my favorite pics from my niece’s wedding.
